If you have never used self-storage you should learn a little about it before you go out looking for a storage company. Instead of just sticking with any old type of traditional storage that people have used in the past, there are some other options you can choose from now that is called self-storage. These types of storage containers can be portable or they can be located at a storage facility. If you choose portable storage options the storage units can be brought to you, rather than you taking your belongings to the storage facility. These are referred to as PODS by those in the storage industry.

It is critical to keep in mind that not all storage companies are created equal. Not all self storage containers are the same either. Some are climate controlled and some are not. It will be best to shop around and compare the different self storage companies before you settle on using one. One thing to remember is that you do not have to settle for a storage company that you don’t feel comfortable with. If you feel the units are not secure enough then look for other more secure self-storage options.

Before you sign a contract for a self-storage unit make sure you understand the contract terms. Some will allow you to rent month-to-month. Others will require longer terms. Self-storage facilities can also require a deposit on their self-storage containers too. So be sure you find out the details as to cost, fees, deposits, terms, etc. before you choose a self-storage facility.

If 24 hour access to your belongings is important to you should make sure the self-storage facility that you are going to use allows it. Some self-storage facilities have limited hours for access. Of course the portable self-storage options are also suitable for your needs as well if you want easy and anytime access. Keep in mind too that climate controlled units and temperature controlled units are different. If moisture is a concern make sure you get the sealed self-storage units that are that are climate controlled.
